Overview
Falls are defined as a person unintentionally coming to rest on a round level, often resulting in injury, disability, or death. Fall-related injuries can happen to any age group, yet certain age groups such as older adults are at a higher risk. Falls are the leading cause of injury in Atlantic Canada.

- Falls are the leading cause of injury and death in Atlantic Canada within the year of 2018.
- Throughout Atlantic Canada, Falls were the leading cost of injury, accounting for $760 million (43%) of the total cost of injury in 2018.
- The Highest Cost of Injury by Age (years) Includes:
- Children (0-14): Falls, $52 million
- Youth and young adults (15-24): transport incidents, $77 million
- Adults (25-64): Falls, $207 million
- Older adults (65+): Falls, $464 million
- Falls are the leading cause of injury for all ages throughout the four Atlantic provinces, except for youth aged 15-24 years old as transport incidents is the leading cause.
- Prince Edward Island had the highest cost per capita due to falls compared to other Atlantic provinces ($195.86) for children aged 0-14 years old.
- Cost of fall-related injuries in children aged 0-14 years old account for 42% of total injury related costs.
- Compared to the other Atlantic Provinces, Prince Edward Island had the highest cost per capita due to falls in adults aged 65 years and over ($1,050.37).
- Compared to the other Atlantic Provinces, New Brunswick had the highest cost per capita due to falls for youth aged 15-24 years old ($164.03)
