Injury caused by poisoning occurs when an individual inhales, ingests, injects or touches substances such as chemicals, alcohol, drugs, or other materials.

Overdose of substances occuring within People Who Use Drugs (PWUD) is a form of poisoning, and unintentional injury. For more information and education on Canada's opoid crisis, and the number of deaths and hospitalizations resulting from overdose, please visit this link.

Statistics 
  • Falls are the leading cause of death through injury in Atlantic Canada, followed by suicide/self-harm, transport incidents, and unintentional poisoning.
  • Compared to the other Atlantic Provinces, Nova Scotia had the highest cost per capita due to unintentional poisonings for those aged 25-64 years old ($49.24).
  • Compared to the other Atlantic Provinces, Nova Scotia had the highest cost per capita due to unintentional poisonings for those aged 0-14 years old ($8.82).
*Cost per capita is the cost per person in the province.* 
  • Compared to the other Atlantic Provinces, Nova Scotia had the highest cost per capita due to unintentional poisonings for those aged 65 years and older ($12.59).
  • For adults throughout all Atlantic provinces aged 65 years and over unintentional poisoning was the third leading cause of injury.
